Gain a better understanding of acrylic painting techniques so you can create more realistic seascape paintings

My clear, detailed and easy-to-follow instructions will take you from start to finish of a large seascape painting, one step at a time. Along the way, I share all the tips, techniques, principles and the mindset that it takes to paint like a pro. My tri-colour method of painting will enable you to tackle any subject, even if you are new to painting, new to acrylics or haven't picked up a brush in years.

You Want to be Able to Paint With Confidence

The Problem is you:

  • Are not sure how to choose and/or mix the right colours

  • Have trouble with blending because acrylic paint dries too fast

  • Can't get the shading and perspective right to make objects appear realistic

  • Want to be able to fix mistakes when things don't go to plan

Right now you might be feeling like this:

  • Your paintings never look the way you imagined them in your head

  • You are afraid to try in case you fail

  • You have lost your confidence because it has been such a long time

What if you could:

  • Discover a systematic process to follow that will get you results

  • Join a friendly, supportive art community where you can get help without fear of judgement

  • Feel confident enough in your abilities to start creating your own unique, standout artworks

  • Prove to yourself that you do have what it takes to become an artist and potentially even sell your work

Stunning seascape paintings are possible for everyone, ever newer painters or those who are new to acrylics

In this course you will master techniques like:

  • The reflection and refraction approach to painting waves that look like you can dive right through them.

  • My tri-colour method for making 2-dimensional images appear 3D

  • Colour mixing, colour matching and using deconstructed colour for more vibrant work

Meet Your Instructor

Course Creator Jenny Buchanan

Jenny has been working as an artist since 1996. In that time she has won awards, participated in gallery exhibitions and had artworks selected for public display. As an art teacher, Jenny has held in-person classes in acrylics, watercolour and pastels. In her words: “Since launching Blue Beach House Art School in March 2020, I have come to realise that my true gift, as an artist, is being able to communicate everything about painting in a clear and easy-to-understand way, through video lessons. Getting great results for students is about much more than just filming a painting. Demonstrating the process, without being there in person, requires excellent communication skills. That is why I explain both the how and the why of everything, in great detail, both on video and in writing. My teaching style is pretty much straight to the point, very rarely veering off the subject at hand. You won’t hear about what the dog is doing or how clever the grandchildren are (even though they are, of course). It is really all about the painting and about your success as an artist. Art is very personal and sharing your work can feel like you have stepped out onto a large stage. I always offer supportive and constructive (but honest) feedback on your work but only if and when you ask for it. The thing to remember, though, is that if you aren’t brave enough put yourself out there, you will never know how great you can be.”

Each lesson contains art theory and techniques you can use in all your future artworks:

Over the course of completing one large seascape painting I have managed to cover over 35 different aspects of acrylic painting. Each lesson contains not only a video demonstration but also detailed instruction on the 3 important concepts that are demonstrated in that lesson. This is all the background information you need to know to be able to complete your own standout artworks both now and in the future. These are the techniques, tips, art principles and methodology that will move you from copying to creating. I also dig deep into my own painting mindset because I figure the stumbling blocks I have come across in my artistic journey are quite possibly the same ones that you are facing now. If I can share with you how I get my head around the difficult stuff then it may just help you to get that lightbulb moment a bit sooner. Here are just a few of the skills you will master:

  • Blend colours seamlessly

  • Create depth in your painting using perspective

  • Mix and Match colours

  • Use light and shade to make objects appear 3D

  • Transition colours

  • Learn to paint shadows

  • Create a compelling composition

  • Fix mistakes without having to start over

  • Make your whites appear brighter

  • 3 different ways to transfer an image to canvas

3 Ways to Learn

Key questions that others are asking:

  • What materials do I need?

You can download a copy of the materials checklist for the course from this page

  • What if I can't start straight away?

Once you are enrolled you get lifetime access to all the lessons. Start at any time, work at your own pace and return to the lessons as many times as you like.

  • How long are the videos?

The lessons are broken down into small, manageable size chunks. Each video lesson is about 10-15 minutes long and includes both a video demonstration and detailed information on the techniques and principles covered in that lesson.

  • Can this be completed in oils?

Many students have completed this course in oils with great success. However, I believe acrylic is the easiest medium to master, particularly for beginners. I would not recommend watercolour for this course

  • I'm a beginner. Will I be able to keep up?

You can pause and rewind the lessons, slow them down or watch them over again. You can also switch to full screen for a better view. For personalised help you can email me at any time or post your work in our friendly and supportive Facebook group

  • What if I am not very good with computers?

After you sign up you will receive instructions on how to access your course. In the first chapter a short video tutorial will show you how to find your way around the classroom.

  • I can't draw. Will I be able to do the course?

In Lesson 1 I show you three methods of transferring your image from photo to canvas. You don't need to be able to draw in order to paint stunning seascapes.

To get to the end of the journey you need to keep taking the steps
